Banded Vase |
We use a mixture of iron oxide and rutile oxide (a mineral containing
titanium and iron impurities) for the light brown bands and iron chromate
for the darker bands. The glaze is poured onto the piece and allowed
to overlap in areas to create thick and thin areas which create a greater
visual interest for the banding that goes over it. Next it is put onto
a potter's wheel and each line or "band" is handpainted onto
it. The piece is then fired to 2425°F (1310°C). This is a Stoneware
clay, fired in a slightly reducing atmosphere. Functional as a flower
vase for cut or dry flowers, as well as an "art piece".
Orders taken if this one is sold. Though no two pieces will fire out exactly the same, this glaze is very similar from firing to firing. |
