logo The Face Pots Gallery

All of the pottery in this gallery is made with a gray-white stoneware clay fired to 2425°F (1310°C) in an oxidizing fire. After making the original face, soft clay was pressed over it to form a negative impression. This was fired, and we hold it on the outside while pressing the clay into it from the inside. This only gives us a rough placement of the eyes, nose, and mouth which need to be further modelled and smoothed. The bone structure is suggested by pushing out the cheeks and chin. Because of all the handwork after the intial impression, each face is similar but different from any other.
